This is the same recipe as the beat bock (a dark, toasty, sweet german lager), but was tossed in a keg previously filled with sarsaparilla. Add an anise aroma and some complexity of flavor to the beer.
Wacky! Smells incredibly strongly of sasparilla, and the flavor is pretty strong as well on the anise and root-y flavors, mixing with the dark bock, and having a very dry almost bitter finish.
Very interesting, but I think the sasparilla ended up overpowering the beer a bit.

This aggressively-hopped, richly malty beer was given an extra-long 120-min boil to provide color and a depth of caramel sweetness. It was then aged on Bourbon-soaked American Oak Cubes for 5 months. Brewed on the smaller end of the style, this barleywine is one you can drink 12 ounces of and still stand up straight.
Deep caramel and oak nose. On the buds, it's rich and woody, with lots of plum at first with a tart, smokey finish. Almost tastes like a dubbel with extra hops and a non-Belgian yeast strain. Would sip another, and perhaps one more after that. Well done!

A little off the beaten path of beer flavors, I tossed in 2.5lbs of roasted peppers (anaheims & jalapenos) to get a nice savory party going in this Belgian style pale ale. Sweet on the tongue, this beer finished fairly high (1.025 FG) and was not aggressively hopped in terms of bittering (<20 IBUs). Dry-hopped with famously aromatic citra hops, this beer has a unique bouquet that will have you certain that you have been well and truly Chile Pepper Thunder... I think you get the rest.
Damn son! This beer does not shy away from the peppers. The beer has a nice sweetness and hops aroma that's a great backbone for ridiculous, ridiculous amounts of pepper flavor and spiciness. It was hard to drink a whole glass, but great to taste!

A pretty classic malty American-style brown ale pumped up in ABV and malty goodness with a dose of extra dark candy syrup made from Dates and Beets; transforming the beer into a rich, gently fruity ale reminiscent of a Belgian dubbel, but with a gentler yeast character due to the cold-fermented American Ale yeast. This style was difficult to brew. Frankly I don't like the style all that much, but trying it all grain was a challenge and a good experience. Trust me mashing corn and doing multiple rests is a challenge for anyone and now I see how difficult it is to truly get a clean beer with not much flavor. Serve cold like the big boys do!
Truly awesome! A great clean beer is definitely what you've achieved. I love the hint of sweetness (assuming that's the corn?) Delicate, too, and I feel like in this way you could have brought out a stronger cream / corn flavor and I wouldn't have minded... it's exotic! play with it!

Classically, the American Pale Ale features a clean fermentation and judicious use of cascade hops. This is no exception. Where this one is unique is in its heavy dose of rich-tasting Munich Malt and its aggressive late kettle additions of summit hops - a "new school" strain known for an intense tangerine-orange flavor, a smooth bitterness, and distinct "dankness."
This one was a real foamer! I got a nice citrus aroma, probably from the summit, but unfortunately it was hard to get at what tasted like a pretty subtle beer under all that carbonation.
- Sam
It's strange - I made 10 gallons of this beer and kegged half, then bottled half. The kegged version was a soft, classic pale ale. The bottled version has a cidery, "homebrew" quality that I do not care for. While none of the bottles I kept were gushers, the carbonation is a bit too crisp on them - but the flavor difference is severe. I think the increased carbonation and resulting carbonic acid is the culprit because the beer tastes much better 30 minutes after I first poured the bottle into my pint glass. So I recommend anyone wait for 30 min after opening the bottle to drink it. Both the warmer temperature and resulting lower carbonation will improve the flavor.
- Skyler
Also got foam, and definitely tasted the acid. But I didn't mind it as a contrast to all of the other beers in the shipment.
- Robin
I certainly enjoyed it... sad I didn't read the 30min mention before drinking it :) It did indeed seem a bit soft on the flavor, if I find another bottle I'll drink it again a bit warmer.
- john
Nice floral aroma with some citrus notes. Was highly carbonated like mentioned before but not a gusher. Lighter in flavor than the 5.4% ABV suggests. Overall a good beer!

I got a little something fruity in this beer, especially in the aroma, that may come from some overactive yeast, but it wasn't major, and otherwise the beer had some nice malty biscuit flavors.
- Sam
I didn't get the same fruitiness as Sam. I actually like this quite a bit, especially the crisp nuttiness. A bit on the dry side -- I think this might have benefited from a bit of maltodextrin or some more Munich-style malt to give it a bit more backbone. Definitely something I could drink a lot of, though.

A lavender-tinged brew with a hint of rye to get you through your Thanksgiving withdrawal.
Really amazing use of lavender here. I think any more and it would've tasted soapy to me, but as is it has a really sweet floral aroma and nice lavender flavor. The beer's got a slightly bitter aftertaste, I'm assuming from the hops, that I didn't think matched well with the lavender, however.
- Sam
Nice and smooth, but I was expecting more hops.

I love this experiment. Although I think I'll disagree with Sam; this may have been a touch too much lavender. It's more of a prominent flavor than an aftertaste. And it does seem a bit bitter. I would *love* to see a subtler version of this, since I think you're on to something :)
- john
I liked it. Good carbonation for the style. I had to double check the label to make sure this was the lavender beer. Very subtle, which is good. Better to err on the side of not enough lavender. I'd drink another. Keep this brew in your brewing rotation. Thanks!
- Matt
Very tasty beer. The lavender was a bit overpowering, but the concept is excellent.

I don't like most Rauschbiers, as they remind me too much of beef jerky. The smokiness on this one is suuuper mild--some would probably complain that it's not to style, but I think it's kind of nice.
- Sam
Lovely! Thick, hearty, and mild smoke flavor as Sam says, that I'm a big fan of. Really well balanced. Would seek out again!
- john
The smokiness level is perfect, but the base beer needs a little improvement. Mine was also overcarbed, which may have stirred up the sediment and affected the flavor.
- Colin
Rich, malty, chewy, and subtly smoky. Very good!
Unfortunately, mine as well was hyper carbonated, so ended up pretty flat by the time it was in-glass.

I thought this had really nice classic saison flavors (very floral and fruity) without overpowering the flavors of the grains. Maybe little overcarbonated for my taste.

Aroma: Deep Chocolate; Appearance: Pure Blackness w/ dark tan head consisting of tiny tight bubbles; Mouthfeel: Bitterness that thins out as it slips to the back of the palate; Taste: Roast and Chocoate, mild hops kick in about half way through perfectly, and finishes with a subtle cherry/caramel like flavor; Overall: An excellent Dry Stout that nails all the important qualities. I could see a tad more oatmeal, caramel, cocoa, or roast malt to increase mouthfeel and push this to 5-stars.

I really enjoyed this one. Nice juicy and floral hops, nice caramely malt. If I were to wish for any change, it'd be to just have more of everything... more malts and more hops. I like the recipe as-is, but would love to try it when cranked up to 11.
- anonymous
I really loved the citrus-y hop flavor on this one.
- Andrew M.
Gorgeous amber color, balanced carbonation with lingering lacy, and nice malt backbone. Enough residual sweetness to dull the alcoholic burn, but not so far as to make it an instant hangover. Like the other reviews I think I'd like to see a little more hop in the nose, to amp up the floral notes. I also wonder what temperature this fermented at -- it might benefit from a slightly higher fermentation temperature to draw out a hint of fruitiness from the yeast (or use a less crisp strain). Overall, solid beer, the best of my 6-pack!
- Johnny d.
Nice beer, definitely to style. I would prefer it with more aromatic hops, but that's probably a personal taste thing.
- Sam
My bottle was clearly showing its age and no longer had much hop flavor or aroma. The bitterness came through and so did the rich body (too rich for my taste), but not much else. It's too bad this beer sat at room temperature for so long!
- Skyler
Good beer. Beer was really carbonated - almost a Champagne of IPA. I liked how the hoppiness was at the start and the finish was very American ale. Finish almost had metallic taste to it.
- Brandon
I think this is a very nice beer. Good color, clarity, and carbonation (I wonder if Brandon's bottle got an extra dose of priming sugar). The alcohol is well balanced, not too strong. Nice job. I would really like to try a slightly hoppier version of this, particularly from more late hops or dry hops.

A very nice saison! Lots of apple, almost cidery without being offensive in the least. I think my only request would be a bit more spice/wood notes, but that's just my personal preference.

I'm not very familiar with this style, but there was a lot to enjoy about this beer. I liked the carbonation and citrus on the palate, the lightness in the mouth, and the fullness of flavor. But there was perhaps some residual diacetyl that came across at the finish.
- Sean
My bottle wasn't quite a gusher, but was definitely over-carbonated. The over-carbonation lead to the yeast sediment getting disturbed, and so I ended up with a cloudy, overly spritzy glass of something. The beer was also too dark and too sweet to really call Kölsch, but I think it was a fair example of an American Blonde Ale, and the flavor wasn't bad once I allowed the excessive carbonation to dissipate a bit.
- Skyler
Excellent Kolsch. I was amazed at how clear it came out. Lots of flavor and a very nice light treat on Thanksgiving
- Brandon

Very nice - I sensed just a hint of thinness in the front of the tongue that didn't seem to meld with the remainder of the malt profile, but just a hint at most. A little more of a hop bite would be my preference, but I think you hit the style fine without it.

The FG is clearly not correct. If you read it when the beer was cold, it would show a higher gravity than if you read it at the 60F a standard hydrometer is designed for - maybe that's what happened?
Anyway, I still took issue with the beer because of the overwhelming banana aroma. I was immediately reminded of a banana laffy taffy when I popped the bottle, and the flavor was the same. While I Bavarian Weissbier should have some banana and clove aromas, I found the banana too dominant of an aroma/flavor. I suspect this was fermented too warm and without a starter, as it came across more like a Belgian ale than a Hef. This is a very difficult style to nail just right, though (I know I haven't), and if you are interested, there is a great discussion about it here: http://forum.northernbrewer.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=40751&hilit=weissbier#p355548

A light, refreshing British bitter, perfect for a day at the Oval.
I think the bitterness is acceptable and the malt character is nice and easy, but there is a slight astringency that could be hop-derived or could be water or sparge-derived. Otherwise, the balance seems pretty good to me. The fermentation-related flavors are decent, as well. Not bad.

My personal fave of batch #7. I found this very crisp, with great length and density on the palate, then good finishing hoppy character.

Man, there's a lot going on in this beer. I got a wild mix of flavors (herbs, citrus, a little banana) that I'm guessing come from both the yeast and the Sorachi. It was a bit noisy, but overall I liked it!

Rather extraordinary flavor profile, but I love the idea of this beer more than the beer. I think the brewer did everything exactly right - there were no loose ends, no off flavors, everything fit just right - but it's just not my choice of poison.

Tart is right! It tastes like it was brewed with love, but the recipe needs some tweaking. Worth trying again with a bit less blackberry so that the porter flavors can come out a bit. Might do well with a some more unfermentable sugars as well to bring up the sweetness a bit. It's a cool idea though, glad I got to try it!

Wrote a long review, but it seems people keep it short here. Criticisms are that the head's not as smooth or lasting as I expected. Lots of sediment. I like a little more oatmeal in the nose. More hop than expected. I kind of wish it had more coffee/chocolate notes from the malts. I like a heavier, smoother stout, where this has a rather lively feel to it. While it's not dead-on with my mental model of oatmeal stout, it's an enjoyable and tasty beer, and I'm happy to have it. Hope my first ever review is helpful and not too harsh. You make a good beer, sir, and I appreciate it very much.
- Evan
Definitely one of the most crisp stouts I've ever had. I like the roasted, biscuit flavor that lasts throughout, even several minutes after the first taste. I would have liked to see a little more roastiness on the nose. Poured a nice head, but didn't quite have enough aroma, almost more like a bock than a stout. The ABV is certainly noticeable -- perhaps with a little higher FG and more residual sweetness, it wouldn't feel quite as peppy. Not what I expected, but certainly easy to drink! Maybe throw in a blast of dry hops next time and make this one into a Black IPA...
- Johnny d
This was my favorite in batch #7. It was not sweet and overwhelmingly oatmeal-y like other oatmeal stouts I've had. I like!
- Jeremiah
My second favorite after the Sorachi Wheat in batch #7. I liked the density of malt flavor in this beer a lot without any heaviness on the palate. For me this was just very smooth and easy drinking.
- Sean
While not a traditional Oatmeal Stout by any means, this is a deliciously nutty, very drinkable beer. I was expecting a richer, heartier brew, but the crispness of the beer doesn't make it any less tasty.
It's hoppiness is certainly not usually found in stouts, but who cares about tradition when it tastes so good!

A good beer! Carbonation was a bit sharp for the style, but the flavors were very well balanced. I'd have another.
- Matt M
Interesting flavor profile, with nuts, toasted malt flavors and some funk on the back end. Reminds me of a sexy librarian archetype.
- Sean
Love the balance on this beer, lots of biscuit with an English hop pop. Might be even better with a touch more crystal malt to add depth.
- Matt
I've never had such a delicious biscuit flavor in a beer before. Really nice.
- Sam
A bit sweet for my taste, and really too carbonated to be style-appropriate (a problem I have also been having since switching back to bottle-conditioning). Additionally, the fruity esters are a little prominent for my taste. The malt sweetness on the back end seems odd considering the low final gravity you list.
- anonymous
Clarity and color are awesome. White head quickly dissipated just like London Pride or Master Brew. I think it could use more depth in the malt department, and more bitterness. Still, I like it more than my Hummingbird.
- Loren Tama
Aroma: malt aroma with light fruitiness. Appearance: very clear golden red/brown with a beautiful white head. Mouthfeel: medium body with high carbonation. Taste: Caramel and Biscuit Malt flavor, with Spicy bitter hops to balance. Overall: Excellent beer! Only thing I could hold against it is probably that it is a bit over carbonated for the style, but you might have wanted that.

American Brown Ale with a slight West Coast tilt. 2-Row + 5 specialty malts. Hallertauer Mittelfrueh, Simcoe, Nugget, Summit, Amarillo, and Columbus hops.
A bit deceiving, as the bitter hoppiness definitely takes you by surprise for a brown ale. It's just personal preference, but I like my Brown Ales malty and nutty. This has way too much of a bitter hop finish which drowns out any of the nice maltiness that this could have otherwise.

I really liked whatever hop was used in this beer, but it was a bit too heavy on the bittering hops for my tastes. The hop aftertaste covered up the nice malty notes that I like in a brown.

****Edit - Tim, your taste buds do not deceive you. This recipe came from Vinnie himself at Russian River Brewing. Hops include -- for 10 gallon batch -- Columbus (11oz), Centennial (4.5oz), and Citra (6.5oz), and was dry-hopped two times. Citra replaced the Simcoe hops as the recipe calls for, as they can be difficult to find now.
Excellent! Reminds me of Pliny the Elder. What type of hops did you use?

Crisp & clean, with a nice light acidic raspberry flavor. Well balanced, and not sweet at all. Great for a hot summer day.
- Don
I am such a girl. This is the best beer ever.
- Eden
Red orangy color, reminiscent of Chimay, just beautiful. Smells of raspberry. Solid beer - hops and raspberry go well together. Just right amount of tartness, not too much. Can pick out the hops. Starts with raspberry flavor that fades as the hop flavor starts to pick up. Perfect for summertime by the pool. Good flavor, could use a bit more body. Tastes stronger than smells. Maybe more melon than berry flavor. Was it made with real fruit?. "Smells like flowers, tastes like wonderful." Hombrewer said "I would drink the shit out of this."
- tasting panel of six
i don't like fruit beers, but this was good.
- joseph
A bit weird with the fruit and hops on the first sip, but once I got used to the combination it turned out rather lovely. Mellow hops and mellow fruit make for a great complexity; neither overpowering the other! Would seek out again.

Brewed the same week Randy left us, we're convinced this porter captured just a little bit of his spirit... Oooooh yeah!
It looks like we over-carbonated this one-- if yours is too fizzy, let it sit for a few minutes. Otherwise we think it's pretty solid.

Stir it with a Slim Jim for a more authentic flavor

Meat & potato & porter, done.
- Eden
Def enthusiastically foamy, but that dies down. Super big & rich, chewy, hints of roasted nuts & vanilla & coffee. Seems almost more like a stout than a porter. Damn tasty! Great malt/hop balance.
- Don
The champagne of porters. Might be fizzy for the style, but I'm quite fond of it. I don't drink porters often, but when I do, I'll now be reminded of Randy Savage.

An earthy stout with less cherry flavor than you'd think -- for those who don't need their stout to be sweet. Cozy up with this one when the fog comes in off the bay. Due to an excess of drinking-while-brewing, we're not sure about the ABV, OG or FG. Enjoy your adventure!
I like the subtleness of the cherry and dry finish. A bit boozy tasting and I wish it had a little more body.
- alex
Very mild; slight sour aroma, and very very subtle cherry. More like a porter than a stout to me. Dry, slightly sour & hoppy finish. Quite a mellow beer.
- Don
Lovely! The cherry is light enough that it gives a subtle enough flavor to the stout-ish-ness that becomes a great drink for an introduction to stout beers. I wouldn't consider this fruity, but rather just greatly flavorful, and I think the only thing it lacks I'd possibly more stout body. [second, or third bottle: yep, still lovely.]

Palmolive, lemon soap smell (consensus on this). Spicy soap smell. Nice lime flavor. Carbonation is good if a bit light. Drinkable. Mouthfeel is like the Vietnamese lemon soda I had yesterday. (This beer was a bit polarizing in terms of tasters opinions - one thought it was the best yet, another the worst yet of the three we'd tasted.) Almost a cilantro flavor. Not to style.

I really liked it, felt more like I was drinking a soda than a beer but it was really refreshing and tasty. Nice ginger flavor and I liked the turbidity.

Pretty good! Tastes kind of like a cross between a wheat beer and a pale ale. Smooth light-medium body, very subtle hop character, and a slight lemon-funk finish. Definitely leans toward the malty side of the force.

Something not right with this one. Funky. Tastes of postage. Fishy. Under-carbonated. Maybe an infected batch?
- tasting panel of six
Mine was in a green bottle (we should stop using those!) and tasted a bit light-skunked because of that. I feel like this would work better with different hops, maybe something more peppery. I'd also try using more sucrose to get a lighter body. Absolutely drinkable as is, just needs a little debugging.
- Matt
- anonymous
Melange of flavors, but it tastes like the objective was six flavors, all of which are competing a bit too much here. The hops are a bit too fresh, and the body is heavy enough to make them overly noticeable. Not terrible! but wouldn't try this one again :). [ edit: had another bottle somewhere! better the second time around. mellows with age? ]

Low carbonation, very flat
Mildew smell
Slightly pungent water smell (consensus on this descriptor)
Weird grainy aftertaste
Pear taste on the back of the tongue – tastes like the syrup you would find in a can of pears

Course head. Fizzy mouthfeel. Almost like a lemony hefeweisen. Thin, lightly tart, no malt backbone. Too light for amber. I think undercarbonated? Not sure how brown ales should be. Yummy sweet beer though! Love that you used beets -- I wanted to let it warm just to see exactly what weird things it'd do.
- Miranda & Jake
Had this over a friends house. First time hearing about this , great idea .
Aroma , caramel toasty , sweet malts , mild fruit esters , raisin , dried fruits , subdued hop , citrus , no off aromas .
Poured with slight haze . Almost still . Hints of carbonation . Dark amber red hues.
Sweet caramel raisin malts . Underlying toasty almost burnt notes . Hop character seemed overwhelmed , moderate bitterness comming thru, finishes sweet almost underattinuated with a little diacitel.
Med full mouthfeel carbonation would have really helped , low alcohol warmth .
Overall . Well made but could be improved . More IBUs in the boil , increase the final hop additions to bring out more flavor. Perhaps adding more gypsum to make the bitterness pop. Clean good base malts for style . A proper pitch of yeast will help complete fermentation and leave enough healthy yeast for carbonation .

A lager-yeasted ale. We'd have called it a steam beer but the name has been trademarked away forever -- kinda like a certain cartoon that serves as this beer's off-brand appellation. This beer is wholly appropriate for a unseasonably warm, effervescent San Francisco summer afternoon during the Industrial Revolution.
Simple, clean flavor; very true to the style, but with a little more going on than Anchor steam. Really liked it!

We're not used to drinking session IPAs (the hoppier, the better for us!) so we were maybe led astray by the IPA name. Needs more time to carbonate, I think -- we'll drink the second we have in a while.
- Jake Stenger
Has a good initial hit of hop, but the finish tastes very watery. Mine also had almost no carbonation.
- Blake
Seems like it needs more time to bottle condition, and turned out lighter than I thought! Carbonation should improve if it's out of the fridge a bit longer
- Alex Chrisman
I picked my batch a week late so it had a little more time out of the fridge. The carbonation was fine for me. I typically like cask IPAs with less carbonation, so it was a plus. I thought it for a lighter beer it was had really good flavor.
- Joseph Shipp
nice flavor upfront but maybe a tad weak on the finish. great flavor for a session beer though!

Reminds me of a Sierra Nevada with a bitter finish

Tasty and cinnamony! Mmm.
- Lindsay Eyink
This one had some harsh boozy tastes at first, but just tried a bottle yesterday and it has improved a ton. Tone down the chamomile a bit and I think you've got a stellar beer.
- Sam Gilbert
Hello chamomile! Next time around I think i'd do about 1/3 the chamomile I had here and use less grain, ended up being a bit sweeter/strong that I had hoped for.
- Tollef Biggs
Tried it last night and liked it, but by the end of the bottle found it a bit too cinnamony. Agree with the others who say toned down this would be great!
- Paul Alsdorf
Tasted peachy with a nice fall spice finish.
- Emily Ford
Liked the spices!
